OSHAWA – Two local unions were honoured by the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) for making $200,000 in charitable donations to help build classrooms.
United Association Local 463 and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 894 will see classrooms named after each of them.
"This is a great example of how local unions can invest in the prosperity and development of our community," said Garth Cochrane, business manager for UA Local 463. "Despite these difficult economic times, I am proud to say that our members continue to make donations to help improve our entire community."
UOIT president Dr. Ronald Bordessa was on hand for the ceremony, awarding plaques to representatives from both unions. The plaques will be placed outside the two classes in the university’s Science Building.
"We are thrilled to have been able to make such an important contribution to UOIT," said John Gillett, business manager for IBEW Local 894. "We take great pride when our members are able to come together to support our community like this."
