CHBA - Lethbridge Awards Scholarships to Apprentice Workers

Left to right (Anita Hartman, Scholarship recipient Ari Prawdzik, Angie Zuba).

LETHBRIDGE — May 22 2013 was the date for the first annual Human Resources Dinner designed to celebrate, grow and promote the high school RAP program, honour apprentices’ choosing to work in the trades and also give community business professionals an understanding of how to leverage the skills of all generations in the workplace and grow business to outstanding levels.
The Key note speaker, Herky Cutler was able to show business professionals that they could potentially employ up to five different generations of workers at any given time and that by recognizing the strengths of each generation; mature workers, baby boomers, generation X, Y and Z, could produce amazing results in unison. Herky’s unconventional teaching methods left the crowd howling with laughter and fervently writing notes to utilize in the work place.
After the insightful teachings of Herky Cutler, the CHBA was able to recognize three deserving, hard working apprentices with scholarships of up to $1,250 they are able to put toward their education. The winning candidates ranged from 1st year to 4th year apprentices in the fields of plumbing and gas fitting, heavy equipment technician and sheet metal working.
A very special grant was awarded to the Victoria Park High School in support of their Trades & Technology program. Tom Kocken, the shop teacher at Victoria Park School was in attendance to accept the grant that will be used towards purchasing materials for the students to utilize when in class.
This event saw business owners and professionals from across the region, including home builders, suppliers, trades and service professionals. In addition, MLA East Bridget Pastoor was in attendance along with Alderman Tom Wickersham and Councilor Bridget Mearns. The CHBA plans to host this event annually and raise awareness around the benefits and success in the residential construction industry.
