CHBA Welcomes Relief for Families' Pocketbooks
OTTAWA, November 12, 2014 — The Canadian Home Builders' Association (CHBA) today welcomed federal government measures that support and improve the financial position of hard-working Canadian families. CHBA was also pleased that Minister Oliver made reference to the ever increasing costs of housing-a key concern of the Association. CHBA has been actively engaged with all three levels of government to find ways they can do their part in improving housing affordability for hard-working Canadians.
CHBA is supportive of the government's measures that reduce the tax burden on small- and medium-sized businesses, as well as on families. Both of these directly enhance Canadians' ability to access home ownership. CHBA's "Creating a New Conversation about Homes, Communities and Canadians" outlines key recommendations on the federal role to complement this focus on supporting Canadian families.
"Home ownership is a central part of the Canadian dream, and a family's financial well-being," says CHBA President Bard Golightly, a builder/developer in Edmonton, Alberta. "Minister Oliver's announcement of the Economic and Fiscal Update acknowledged the importance of affordability in housing, and we're pleased to continue working with the government to improve the prospects for hard-working young families to become homeowners."
"The tax burden from all three levels of government on housing is one of the main factors that's putting home ownership out of reach for young families," says CHBA CEO Kevin Lee. "Improving the financial position of young families through tax reform and then taking targeted action to reduce government-imposed costs on housing will allow more Canadians to achieve financial independence and realize their goals, including owning their own home."
