Passive houses open in Vancouver
November 15, 2018
Three Passive standard houses held tours over the Remembrance Day weekend in Metro Vancouver, and information on each project is available online.
Passive House homes are characterized by heavier thermal insulation, triple-glazed windows, and a ventilation system with heat recovery among other things. Thanks to the ventilation system, the air quality is noticeably better than in conventional buildings. Other criteria for the Passive House standard includes an airtight building envelope and the avoidance of thermal bridges.
These open house tours were conducted by the British Columbia Institute of Technology’s high-performance building lab in Burnaby, the Blenheim Passivhouse project in Vancouver, and the West Vancouver Passive House by builder and designer James Dean.
Details of buildings participating in the International Passive House Open Days can be found at www.passivehouse-database.org.
