Lowly garage seen as top renovation target

September 7, 2020

Forget about kitchens and bathrooms, this year, with so many people quarantined at home, a popular home improvement project is creating a dream retreat in the garage, according to U.S. reports. An extension of the home, a garage can be transformed into extra usable space for the entire family, proponents say.
With more remote workers not commuting, garage space for cars can be swapped for more living space—even on a temporary basis.
A refurbished garage can serve as a home office, workout area, child’s mini-classroom or a recreational and entertainment site. And, according to insurance company GEICO, it’s also possible a garage upgrade could increase a home’s overall value.
Upgrades include floor finishing, built-in storage and replacing the large garage door with a wall if the change is permanent, or new garage doors that include glazing to add more light into the space, if the owner intends to switch the space back to being a regular garage in the future.
