Residential building permits rise across Canada
October 14, 2022

Led by the residential sector, the total value of building permits in Canada increased by 11.9 per cent to $12.5 billion in August 2022 from a month, according to Statistics Canada.
Residential permits were up 12 per cent to $8.4 billion, while non-residential sector permits increased 11.8 per cent to $4 billion—much of the increase coming from Ontario.
Construction intentions in the single-family homes component marked a modest 0.4 per cent increase from July 2022. However, the value of building permits for multi-family projects increased by 22.2 per cent; permits increased 85 per cent in Ontario.
A $480 million permit for a luxury skyscraper in Toronto along with several other permits for apartments resulted in the largest recorded monthly value for the province, Statistics Canada reported.
Industrial and institutional permits led the action in the non-residential component.
Industrial building permits rebounded with an increase of 18.1 per cent. Saskatchewan sharply increased by 77.7 per cent with three permits over $5 million. Nova Scotia also had a notable increase with a variety of smaller permits.
Institutional permit values increased by 39 per cent; government permits rose 224 per cent in Ontario. Permits for a new school in Hamilton and a new building for Toronto-based George Brown College were behind much of the increase.
