Calgary has bucked a residential construction trend in Canada by posting a 20 per cent increase in housing starts this year, according to Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp.
Now Ottawa-based Minto, one of Canada’s largest homebuilders, is expanding in Calgary with its sixth project.
Minto Communities Canada will construct 100 new multi-family units on the last piece of waterfront in Calgary’s East Village project. The East Village is a 49-acre revitalization project by the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC) that will eventually be home to 3,500 housing units.
Minto’s new tower, named Vita, is expected to break ground in 2023.
Minto was the successful developer in a 2021 request for proposal for the 27,000-acre riverfront lot.
The East Village has seen $396 million in infrastructure investments since 2015 and will feature an estimated $3 billion in private investment over its 20-year master plan.
Since its founding in 1955, Minto has built over 95,800 homes. The firm and its entities manage 14,600 rental units.
Minto is joining other residential developers in the Village.
In spring 2023, Winnipeg-based Alston Properties Ltd.'s EV606 will break ground—featuring 44 new residential units and 9,000 square feet of retail space.
BOSA Development’s 42-storey, 337-unit tower is already under construction and set to be complete by the end of 2023.
